CortijoAzul

Cortijo Azul – a quirky cortijo full of character and charm

Hola!

Welcome to Cortijo Azul (a cortijo is a rural dwelling) situated near Hinojares in the south of the Parque Natural de Sierra de Cazorla, Andalucia, Spain. My holiday cottage or “Casa Rural” sleeps up to 8 and accepts pets.  Set within its own organic olive grove it has breath taking views into the mountains.

If you’re looking for something a little unusual, this is the place for you. The house is simple and rustic, yet effortlessly stylish. It has thick stone walls, a blend of antique and modern furnishings and plenty of home comforts. This is not your typical holiday accommodation; it is a cosy, genuine home.

There are walking trails from the door and nearby, lakes, valleys, pretty mountain villages and historic towns just waiting to be explored.  The lovely whitewashed Andalucian villages of Hinojares, Castril and Cazorla are all within easy reach.

Granada airport is 1 hour 30 minutes away with Murcia and Malaga airports around 2 hours.

Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas is the largest Protected Area in Spain and the second largest in the whole of Europe. It is famed for its flora and fauna, rich cultural history and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Whether you are interested in exploring, art and culture or simply relaxing with friends and family, Cortijo Azul is a wonderful year-round destination.

I look forward to welcoming you to my little piece of Andalucia.

Lisa

(By the way, you might be wondering, who am I and why do I own a house in this part of the world? Well I bought Cortijo Azul in January 2018… on a whim it must be said. I just LOVE old houses with their wonky walls and rustic simplicity.  OK they have their challenges, but with its little olive grove and spectacular setting, I just couldn’t resist it. I can’t live here for now but I hope to one day. So, for the time being I let the house out for others to enjoy. I live and work in Mid Wales. It’s a bit like Spain, but with more rain. A lot more rain!!)

Reviews

In a word, brilliant!

The house is a gem, really quirky and beautifully set below the spectacular mountains.

We loved sitting on the terrace watching the birds of prey circling around the mountain peaks. Its a perfect place if you just want peace and quiet and to enjoy nature.

The house is convenient in that its on the edge of 2 National Parks so we took day trips into both Castril and Cazorla. Our highlight was the Castril Gorge walk, it was superb.

Un Fin De Semana Estupendo – A Great Weekend

La casa es muy bonita y amplia. Tenía de todo lo necesario y se veía muy nueva. Muy cómodo ir con mascotas y poder dejarlas libres por la zona. Calidad precio muy recomendable.

The house is very nice and spacious. It had everything we needed and looked very new. Very comfortable to go with pets and be able to leave them free in the area. Good value for money

Things To Do

We are lucky in that there are riding stables in Hinojares 10 minutes away. They offer anything from 1 hour to full day rides in the National Park on beautiful Andalucian horses. For more information see here

For thrill seekers, test your skills and bravery to the max by canyoning down the Barranco el Rio Guadaletin at nearby Embalse de Bolera (20 minutes).  Climb, scramble, slide and swim your way through this spectacular gorge with nothing but nature (and your instructor) to guide you down the twists and turns of the cascading river. Various companies arrange this. See here for just one example.

The area has fantastic hiking opportunities. You can take a short stroll around the village or head down the 6km waymarked trail to the village of Hinojares. Alternatively, for the more adventurous, Parque Natural Sierra de Castril see here and Parque Natural Sierra de Cazorlas, Seguras y Las Villas see here have endless hiking routes to follow. Details are on their web sites.

For natural swimming, you can’t beat the clear waters of Lake Negratin 30 minutes away. There’s a great beach with excellent bar/restaurant at Freila or for a quieter spot head out to Lake Negratin from Cuevas del Campo. See here for Trip Advisor reviews.

An alternative during the summer holidays is to head to one of the excellent open air Municipal Pools. The ones at Pozo Alcon and Castril are great and have grassy areas, shade and a bar/restaurant. Families take a picnic and make a day of it.

Head into the Parque Natural Sierras de Cazorla, Segural y Las Villas for a spot of wildlife watching or birding. Look out for mouflon, wild boar, Golden Eagle, Griffon Vulture…the list goes on….

  See here for further detail.

During the summer months kayaks can be hired on both Embalse Bolera (15km) see here or Embalse Negratin (40km) see here

Places To Go

The pretty whitewashed village of Castril is only 30 minutes from the house.

With its flower filled winding streets, traditional bars and spectacular gorge walk it’s a great place to spend a day.

The attractive & historic town of Cazorla an hour away is the main gateway to the Parque Natural from the west. With winding, steep and narrow cobbled streets, it’s a great place for a meander. Overlooking the town is the famous “Five Cornered Castle. Near Cazorla lies the pretty village of La Iruela with its impressive castle, amphitheatre and “El Chorro”, a huge rock circle with walls of over 100 metres drop.

The whole area is made for nature lovers. See here for more information

The UNESCO World Heritage listed twin towns of Baeza and Úbeda in the Jaen region scupper any notion that there is little other than Moorish influences to the architectural interests of Andalucía.

These fabulous two towns guard a treasure trove of superb Christian Renaissance architecture and are a great place to get a bit of art and culture. See More Here

Set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the beautiful city of Granada is known for its wonderful examples of medieval architecture dating to the Moorish occupation.

The Alhambra Palace is the most famous of all. This sprawling hilltop fortress complex encompasses royal palaces, serene patios and reflecting pools from the Nasrid dynasty. See here for details. 1hr 40 minutes from the house, it’s worth the extra effort to get there for a day.

The Altiplano de Granada region consists of a high plateau surrounded by spectacular mountains and dotted with historic villages and market towns.

A characteristic feature are the many cave houses – visitors are often amused and intrigued by the sight of chimneys protruding from grassy hillsides.

The villages of Galera, Castillejar, Cortes de Baza, Orce, Benamaurel are all great places to see cave houses. See More.

What better way to immerse yourself in real Spain than to visit a local market?

There is one to be had every day of the week in the locality. Castril’s is on a Friday, Huescar’s on a Thursday and Pozo Alcon a Monday.

Markets are the very best place to buy your fruit and vegetables, or maybe try the Spanish speciality of Churros, a sugary sausage shaped doughnut delicacy…..dipped in chocolate!
